Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 35-40 saltine crackers
Toffee Layer
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
Topping
- 2 cups light green candy melts (about 1 1/2-ounce bag)
- Red heart sprinkles
- Green sprinkles of choice
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a 10 x 15-inch baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray it with nonstick cooking spray for easy cleanup.
- Arrange Crackers: Lay out 35-40 saltine crackers in even rows, filling the bottom of the prepared pan completely. Set aside while preparing the toffee.
- Make Toffee: In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt 1 cup unsalted butter with 1 cup packed brown sugar. Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a boil. Continue boiling for 2-3 minutes until it reaches 270-290 degrees Fahrenheit, ensuring the toffee is perfectly cooked.
- Apply Toffee: Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltine crackers. Use a heat-safe spatula to spread the toffee across the crackers without breaking them. Transfer the pan to the oven and bake for 5 minutes to set the toffee.
- Add Candy Coating: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle 2 cups of light green candy melts evenly over the hot toffee. Let the pan sit for 2-3 minutes so the candy melts can soften and melt completely.
- Spread and Decorate: Use a spatula to spread the melted green candy smoothly over the toffee layer. Quickly sprinkle red heart sprinkles and green sprinkles of your choice on top before the candy hardens.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the Christmas crack to cool completely at room temperature until the candy coating hardens. Once set, break into pieces and serve or package for gifting.
Notes
- Store at room temperature in an airtight container or zip-top bag for up to 7 days to keep it crisp.
- For longer storage, refrigerate in an airtight container where it will keep fresh up to 2 weeks.
- To store even longer, freeze the treat up to 3 months in a freezer bag or airtight container with parchment paper layered between pieces to prevent sticking.
- Be careful when spreading the toffee to avoid cracking the saltines.
- Use a candy thermometer for accurate toffee cooking to achieve the perfect hard crack stage.
