Ingredients
Scale
Dip Base
- 8 ounces cream cheese - at room temperature
- 3/4 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Caramelized Onions
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 large Vidalia onion - about 1 1/2 to 2 cups, diced
- 2 cloves garlic - minced
Garnish
- Fresh chives - minced, to garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the Dip Base: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth using a hand mixer or whisk. Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper, mixing well until fully combined. Set aside.
- Caramelize the Onions: In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add the diced Vidalia onions and cook slowly for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. This slow cooking will allow the onions to caramelize and develop a sweet, rich flavor.
- Add Garlic: At the end of the onion cooking, add the minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds, then remove the skillet from heat.
- Cool Onions: Allow the caramelized onions and garlic to cool completely to room temperature before proceeding to avoid melting the dip base.
- Combine: Fold the cooled onion and garlic mixture into the cream cheese mixture. Stir until everything is evenly incorporated. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and black pepper if desired.
- Garnish and Serve: Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and garnish with freshly minced chives. Serve chilled or at room temperature alongside potato chips, carrot sticks, celery, or your favorite dippers.
Notes
- Caramelized onions can be prepared up to 3 days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- Leftover dip keeps well for 5-7 days refrigerated in an airtight container.
- If you prefer a smoother dip texture, you can finely mince the onions or pulse them slightly in a food processor before mixing.
- For a tangier flavor, add a splash of lemon juice or extra Worcestershire sauce when mixing the dip base.
- Use low-fat versions of sour cream and mayonnaise for a lighter dip, keeping in mind the texture may be slightly less creamy.
